Alyssa Robb is one of those people who’s annoyingly good at everything. As well as being a talented photographer, she’s also good at cooking. Good at sewing. Probably good at colouring in between the lines, and well, she’s generally kinda just good at life. The 26-year-old moved to Brooklyn four years ago, and since then has been shooting an all-sort of things in and around New York; from hi-falootin’ parties, to friends, bands and anything else that can be turned into either a pretty or interesting picture.
Switch ingénue Mpho is the leader of a new pack of young, black London girls, who simply refuse to make the music that’s expected of ‘women of colour.’ She booms on new single Box ‘n’ Locks, “Feisty little brown girl / Raised in Brixton town girl /Supposed to be some ghetto chick / Making all this urban music,” which is a direct challenge to the industry that tried so hard to pin her to an R ‘n’ B style. Pigeonhole at your peril.
Habana Outpost – a Brooklyn haven for good times, drool-inducing food, great music and most importantly, a socially accountable vision for the future. Nestled in the gloriously leafy suburb of Fort Greene (whose residents also include Erykah Badu; enough said), this restaurant/generally friendly hang-out spot is New York’s first solar powered eco-eatery. Established in 2005, Habana Outpost runs on a number of green initiatives, including a human-powered bike blender (to blend your own frozen margarita or mojito), a compost and recycling station and offers patrons the option of recharging their phones while they eat, all thanks to a solar-powered charger.
Three can be a tricky number in a relationship. And when you’re looking at three creative, passionate people, it can sound a lot like the countdown to an explosion. But for Avant Car Guard, the Awesome Threesome from Johannesburg, it’s been as easy as one, two…
Avant Car Guard is a conceptual art collective made up of three talented artists in their own rights: Zander Blom, Michael McGarry and Jan-Henri Booyens. They produce large-scale paintings, sculptures, editioned prints, video and installation, and are on a mission to “undermine and interrogate the mechanics that drive the art world.”
Craving a little sartorial eye-candy but enjoying the comfort of your own home, haven’t done the washing (or procrastinating on the bosses dime)? Here are a couple of Berlin based blogs to get your fashion on and while away the time. Obviously not an exhaustive list, they are still an insight into the wonderful world of Berlin street fashion. We recommend popping them in your ‘Other Stuff’ bookmark folder, right next to your astrological compatibility calculator, and getting comfy with a cuppa. Best part is, teeth-brushing, hair-doing and general bathing is optional. Gotta love the Internet.
Is it a book? Is it a flower pot? No, it’s Honbachi, a green super-hero product released by eco-aware design company Tokyo Pistol. Honbachi literally translates to “book pot”and as the name suggests, Honbachi is a range of books remodeled as crazy cute flower pots. Books are sourced from all over the place, and are usually old and deteriorated volumes with a one way ticket to the trash can. Tokyo Pistol has come up with the perfect way to breathe new life into old hardcovers, all the while bringing the beauty of plants and flowers to a room near you.
