Habana Outpost – a Brooklyn haven for good times, drool-inducing food, great music and most importantly, a socially accountable vision for the future. Nestled in the gloriously leafy suburb of Fort Greene (whose residents also include Erykah Badu; enough said), this restaurant/generally friendly hang-out spot is New York’s first solar powered eco-eatery. Established in 2005, Habana Outpost runs on a number of green initiatives, including a human-powered bike blender (to blend your own frozen margarita or mojito), a compost and recycling station and offers patrons the option of recharging their phones while they eat, all thanks to a solar-powered charger.
And if that’s not enough do-gooding, this noble establishment is also involved in investing in the community. The Outpost showcases monthly art installations, holds various weekend initiatives in conjunction with other not-for-profit organisations (such as the recently held ‘adopt a kitty’ event to help find orphaned cats a home), runs a market for local artists and designers to sell their wares, fashion shows and screens movies for free during the summer!
