Mooks Artspace Rob Tucker

21 year old Rob Tuckers’ rise in New Zealand’s art world has been organic but rapid, a transition from high school to full time painting that has not been prescribed by formal training. It all started casually, having the odd show down at the local gallery, and this is where he met people who helped him initially start moving forward. It was a new and exciting way to express himself, but at the time he never saw it as a career path -even though it was always a dream.  Rob says of his rise: “I have never had any training for my art. People see this as a non-conformist approach but to me it is more of a natural progression of my ideas about art. This has helped me forge my own opinions of what I want to achieve rather than being told by someone what is good and what isn’t.”

As if you need yet another reason to venture into the Brooklyn neighbourhood of Fort Greene. But if the leafy trees, beautiful brownstones, warm coffee houses and generally friendly vibe aren’t enough to tip the scales, Fort Greene Flea should do the trick. Held every Saturday (rain, hail or shine) from 10am-5pm at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School, this monster market offers the wares of over 150 vendors. Here you can find almost everything – from the usual booty of vintage clothes, records and antiques, to lobster rolls and Asia dogs (kimchi-filled hot dogs).

How many major music festivals in Japan can you name? Maybe none, although most some might know Fuji Rock Festival, and some might name a legendary event RAINBOW2000 which has started in 1996 and ended before the millennium. But, Metamorphose is one of the biggest outdoor electronic music festivals in Japan held annually in the end of summer, featuring various genres of cutting edge of musicians and DJs from all around the world. Organized by DJ Mayuri starting in 2000, Metamorphose 2009 has just finished this year’s event for 2 days on Sept 4th&5th at Cycle Sports Center, which is a huge outdoor entertainment space, nestled in the mountains,  about a 2 hour drive  from Tokyo.

To celebrate the beginning of the autumn season, the sports center became an annual pilgrimage for Japan’s  music freaks who gathered in the cooled down air to enjoy the likes of Tangerine Dream, Method of Defiance, Yura Yura Teikoku at the Solar Stage, DJ AFRICA BAMBAATAA, Fumiya Tanaka and Mayuri at the Lunar Stage, and Larry Heard aka Mr. Fingers, Moodymann aka Kenny Dixon Jr, Giles Peterson, Smith & Mighty at the Planet Stage. Visit Metamorphose’s MySpace to check out their past festivals including the very first live performance by Manuel Göttsching E2-E4 held in 2006.

If Berlin is for sausages then Greece is for lovers….and for: white pant enthusiasts, classical architecture buffs, party goers, hard core tanners, handsome coppers, moustaches, lazy dogs, friendly pigeons and people who like to eat (a lot). Greece is for Lovers is also the name of a talented design collective based in Athens. Vasso Damkou, Thanos Karampatsos and Christina Kotsilelou make up the core of a creative crew, whose creations, whilst taking a bit of a dig at the traditional Greek establishment, are beautifully made and seriously cool. Here reside the perfect gifts for the possession-ally well endowed.

Modernism. Post modernism. What does it all really mean? It’s a label that gives us security through categorization, a safe, definable understand of the world of art. But, the artists in JHB are fervently destroying the Ism. And it’s an infectious destruction, indeed. It’s about liberation and aesthetic exploration.
