One of things which made a big buzz in Tokyo this year was the mysterious appearance of a series of Sumo Wrestler Stickers. Tagged in various areas of Tokyo like youth culture hot spots Shibuya and Roppongi, and even the high-end district of Ginza, the stickers were cropping up in an assortment of sizes and designs featuring double faces of sumo wrestlers, with line eyes, different hair styles and a variety of cheek shapes.
From smiling, sweating or clenching, the stickers cover a mix of emotions central to the Sumo experience. So who is behind it all? Thanks to Japans strict anti-property damage laws, the creator remains a mystery but is fast gaining fame on blogs and websites, as well as becoming fodder as a social issue on TV news. Who knows where the Sumo Wrestlers might pop up next…keep an eye out on the streets of your town and you might catch a glimpse of Japanese street art history in the making!
