In the interest of maintaining a reasonable level of safety and equality in the sometimes treacherous conditions of the Berlin flea market or junk shop, we have observed and noted a code of conduct – a set of articles, if you will, to ensure a satisfactory bargain hunting discourse is maintained. Please note, these articles serve to promote the sport of treasure hunting, as opposed to finding ‘the’ vintage item of the century. We are talking novelty glass egg cups and incredible photos of people you have never met. Think stories, think nostalgia. And then think about getting both of those things for less than a fiver.
I. No elbows. This is treasure hunting, not netball.
II. Just because you say saw it first, does not mean it is yours. You would have bought it if you really saw it first.
III. No stopping in the middle of the aisle to inspect your treasures. Move to the side or go to the sausage stand.
IV. No marooning of your companions to deal with their over-sized purchases alone.
V. No buying of over-sized purchases you expect your companions to help you with, without suggesting a drink at the other end.
VI. No capitalising on cheap markets to sell on at fancier markets. That is boring and not in the true spirit of treasure.
VII. Do cut your nails.
VIII. Do take a carpet bag / basket / decorative chest to pack your treasures in. The excitement is increased 10-fold when you get to do show-and-tell using a charming prop.
IX. Consider your treasure-loving friends when setting off on your expeditions. You’ll be amazed at the joy both you and the receiver experience over a 50 cent sewing purse, or a funny little ceramic hippo.
X. Never go treasure hunting on an empty-stomach, or with inappropriate footwear. You will get impatient or cross, and will probably end up buying shoes that are even more inappropriate than the silly wedges you wore there.
And an extra one for good measure:
Try and always refer to your things as “treasures.” This makes owning a stack of delightfully odd old photos and too many glasses that are too small to do anything, all the more romantic.
