Back in the 90’s, when Britpop was enjoying it’s heyday, Camden was the hip kid’s heart of the capital. Nowadays, artists, designers and musicians have all migrated to the edgier East where Brick Lane has become a rat-run of kids in black rimmed glasses and wearing their Granny’s fur coats, all packing out the vast array of over-crowded and costly vintage outlets to bag themselves a nice Arran sweater for winter.

But Camden shouldn’t be left to the Goths, Cybergoths and the Emos, it still has a lot to offer – most of which can be found in the Stables Market development; an impressive warren of independent outlets which in the early 19th Century, served as a horse hospital for horses pulling boats along the Camden canal. Go down the steps to the Mezzanine level and an expanse of bygone treasures stretch out before you in ‘What Goes Around Comes Around’ which has the best range of vintage rock t-shirts to be found in London. If you wander into the indoor area situated in the bowels of the market, a whole host of vintage nooks and crannies awaits, specialising in everything from costume jewelry and antique china to trashy romance novels from the 40’s and 50’s and collectable toys from your childhood you would have long since forgotten.

Chalk Farm Road and Camden High Street are also littered with great second hand shops, There is ‘Modern-Age’ who have a great range of leathers and furs, ‘Dappa’ who specialise in high quality vintage items and have their own hair boutique adjoined to the shop and an outlet of the chain ‘Rokit’ which has become something of a London vintage institution over the years. Finally, those seeking a real bargain should head to the new ‘Sue Ryder’ charity shop on Parkway, they have dedicated half the shop over to vintage and have an impressive array of feathery hats!
