With a career spanning 16 years, including exhibitions in the UK and USA, 36-year-old artist Josh Lord has emerged with some of his finest work to date. Thought provoking and confronting, his latest exhibition entitled: When It Was Yesterday, is both an inspiring collection of urban artwork and a confronting image of the (post) modern world.

The exhibition features 32 new works on display at the FAD Gallery on Corrs Lane, until Nov 15.

To find out more, Lord gave the Mooks Report an insight into his latest work and the inspiration behind it…

Following opening night, Lord has already sold almost half his collection and received high praise from visitors and art critics alike.

Distinctly urban with pop-art and street-art influences, Lord’s style is visually striking and at times politically charged, but as Lord will tell you, he’s by no means a political artist – more simply an observer.

“I’m inspired by the things I witness, from many different mediums, I’m also inspired by other artists and the many varied styles out there at the moment.

“I feel it’s important for an artist to use their own personal touch and develop their own style, but it’s also important to see what other artists are doing and draw inspiration from that.”

Josh initially started painting with oil paints, but recently changed to more alternative methods such as markers, acrylic paints and graphite to achieve his desired effect.

“My brother works as a photo journalist and has been in some dangerous situations in war torn regions around the world. Having seen some of his photos, I felt compelled to capture some of that intensity and emotion in my art work. It’s not however a political statement, but more a reflection of society.”

Was there a single moment or experience you had that made you want to become an artist?

“I really do think that there was a single moment, but if anything it started when I was a kid and just liked to draw so i think that it carried on from there.”

What’s next for your work and can we expect any big changes?

“Well i think that the work will get larger, but the subject my change a little.”

What advice could you give to someone working on becoming a successful artist?

“Mainly to not give up, it does take a bit of time, but its also workin and develop there art.”

What’s been the single biggest highlight for you as an artist?

“Commsioned by Mac Donalds house Hong Kong and International house New York, I think it was doing the work, not where it hangs, and the idea that these people asked me to do it was awesome.”

What’s the strangest thing that’s ever happened to you in the art world? (can be anything)

“The strangest thing, I was giving a grant to show in the UK London, after meeting up with artist mates and a week of drunkedness I  was put on a train, I ended up in Edinbourgh, so, I rang one of my mates and was asking them where the hell I was, when I was told that I was in Edinbourgh, I ask was it walkin distance to London, yeah that was a bit of a laugh – NO! – so I wanted to get a show happening so I got in with a crew of artist, it was a very fun time there.”

When It Was Yesterday, will feature at the FAD Gallery until November 20
