Now it’s 2010, the 1990’s are officially vintage… doesn’t that make you feel old?

Selfridges has teamed up with Rellik in their first ever retail collaboration to present a selection of original nineties and nineties-inspired products, all up for sale in one neon-coloured corner of the Oxford Street store. Grunge, Britpop, Nearly-There Technology, YBA’s. Grrrl and Girl Power, Supermodels and the rise of the Super-band are the main themes of the collection, which come together in eclectic and authentic harmony.

Vintage specialists Beyond Retro take the reins on the fashion front, presenting rails of dungarees, plaid shirts plus floral dresses and slips a la Courtney Love. Bumbags are also in attendance along with Vivienne Westwood mock-croc turquoise platforms, a gold Chanel chain belt and a plethora of Casio watches. MAC presents an array of nineties-themed makeup which seems to solely consist of bronzer, ‘Spice’ lip liner, ‘Twig’ lipstick and various shades of brown eye shadows.

IDEA books remind us of some of the cult classics of the era including ‘The Silence Of The Lambs’ by Thomas Harris, ‘Men Are From Mars Women Are From Venus’ by John Gray, ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’ by Helen Fielding and ‘Trainspotting’ by Irvine Welsh. HMV’s top DVDs of the decade include ‘Absolutely Fabulous’, ‘The Vicar Of Dibley’, ‘Red Dwarf’, ‘Scream’, ‘Alien’, ‘Fight Club’, ‘Austin Powers’, ‘Four Weddings And A Funeral’, ‘Titanic’, ‘The Bodyguard’ and ‘Saving Private Ryan’. Musically, it’s all about Pulp, Feeder, R.E.M, Blur, Take That, Radiohead, Supergrass, The Verve, Massive Attack, Chemical Brothers and Stone Roses, all of which can be blasted out via a good old Sony Discman.

Copies of magazines such as ‘Wired, ‘Vogue’ and ‘Interview’ sit in glass cabinets with icons such as Kate Moss, Juliette Lewis and Leonardo DiCaprio gracing the front covers. Also behind glass can be found CK One perfume, something every teen aspired to once Impulse or Lynx had lost its appeal.

It’s funny how alluring and nostalgic the old junk cumulating dust on your shelf can look when it’s re-presented in the shiny alleys of Selfridges. Get yourself down to take a trip down memory lane before the month is out.
