Strongly inspired by Japanese manga, Fantasista Utamaro creates works across several creative mediums including illustration, textile, graphic design and film production. Examples of Utamaro’s work include an illustration for Tokyo Bar in NY and manga works for mashcomix.

You may remember his latest film work in which he directed the promotional video for Chinza Dopeness’s Mogu Mogu, which I reported on in the past. In addition to his various activities as an manga artist, illustrator, graphic designer and animation director, Fantasita Utamaro has recently focused on creating works as a textile designer. Entitled as “Utabric”, a series of his textile work was presented at his solo exhibition “COUNTERSTOP” that kicked off at one of the Tokyo’s creative hubs PUBLIC/IMAGE.3D.

Packed with eager visitors, PUBLIC/IMAGE.3D featured a range of Utabric along with Utabric-covered teddy bears, cushions and other fashionable items.

One of the highlight of the exhibition was his collaboration with the fashion brand GALAXXXY and the Akihabara style idol group “Dear Stage“. GALAXXXY and Fantasista Utamaro collaborated to make costumes for Dear Stage, who performed live at the opening party, which offered to experience a current cultural trend in Tokyo.
