In the notoriously fickle music industry (and amongst what can be even more notoriously fickle music ‘fans’), it’s always exciting to see a deserving band start to receive recognition. This is currently happening to Twin Sister, whose music recently featured on the ‘holier-than-thou’ Pitchfork, which used phrases like “dreamily psychedelic and spacious”, to describe the Brooklyn-based quintet.

Meanwhile, over at the generally snarky Brooklyn Vegan website, their reviewer used these words to paint a better picture: “These days, they’re combining ’80s-back-to-jazz (Sade, Style Council) with more drony/Krautrock type stuff (Notwist, Stereolab),” and also gushed, “They were just fantastic live and I haven’t come away from a show that excited about a new band in sometime. Totally impressed,” so you know Twin Sis are for real.

And if those two big-ups don’t have you convinced to read on, then i’ll also mention that they have been generating some interest from labels whose names we can’t mention (apart from that they like to go stag – you figure it out). The Mooks Report can safely bet cash that we’ll see more of Twin Sister – that’s not even a gamble –  no doubt we’ll get our $crilla back and maybe even double that.

Tell me about the band in the most simplest sense – what are the names of each member, and what do they bring to the band (musically or otherwise)?
Andrea sings and paints, Bryan plays the drums and paces, Eric plays the guitar and makes fruit baskets, Gabe plays the bass and has a college degree, and Udbhav plays keyboards and builds websites.

How did you all round up to get together in the first place?
We flirted a lot back in school and eventually we started dating. Now things are getting serious.

Did you know there is an “all-girl heavy rock” band from Austin, Texas, that also goes by the name Twin Sister? How do you feel about that?
Yes, there is also a Star Wars inspired funk band that has the same name.  Also, Twin Sisters, fine purveyors of children’s educational and devotional music, refuse to sell us twinsister.com.  We don’t mind sharing names, as long as nobody sues us.  Please don’t sue us, it was really hard for us to pick a name.

I am a fan of your Ringtones 4 Teens series. How did this come about and what ‘instruments’ do you use on these recordings?
Sometimes you want to record music, but you don’t want to put any deep thought into it. Its like eating for the sensation of eating, not out of hunger. Also, Twin Sister is greatly influenced by wireless technology and cell phone culture.  Remember when you got your first cell phone?  Remember that first ringtone you chose? Those were the days.  Anyway, we used Casios.

You guys have given away a lot of free music. How well has it worked for you, and what do you see as being the advantages of approaching it this way?
Pretty much the only thing making the music cost us was love and time, so giving it away for free isn’t really a big deal.  As far as advantages, it lets people hear our stuff very easily, which we like.

Tell me a bit about Color Your Life.
Color Your Life is some next level shit. We’re finishing it right now, as we type this.  The drums were recorded in a college TV station’s studio, and the rest was made in our bedrooms and practice spaces.

What’s in the works for the band in the near future?
We’re going on tour for the first time in a month or so, and then we’re going to try and record a double-A side.  Hopefully it won’t take as long as this last EP.

Where can we visit Twin Sister on the internet?
Almost everything we want to show people is on our website, twinsistermusic.com.
