Fiction: a love affair of all things dirty… A darkly lit battlefield of beats and bodies, and on May 2010 a birthday party…Cape Town’s cutting-edge underground playground turned 4. Tick tock, tick tock, the night held many surprises. The guys behind the event had gone all out to satisfy the hungry party mongrels that had been a part of the Fiction manuals over the four years…all of who were waiting to let loose, and get loose, together. Some pure, unsurpassed audiovisual abuse. Yes please!
The line-up was a mix of international and local DJs…names like Mysterion, Ali B, DJ Low, Sedge Warbler and Cape Town’s explosive little lass Funafuji – the force behind the Step Up dub step parties and one of my all time favourite wub wub wub DJs. Over the years Fiction has shown Cape Town what an insane party is really all about…and has followed through once again with the Bee Day night of madness. It’s another one for the Fiction manuals for sure. I caught up with Jonathan Cline for some Fiction history and a bit more info about the night….
How did fiction come about four years ago?
Fiction was born out of being there at the right time and place. Adam Klein and myself had the opportunity to secure the 1st corner balcony overlooking Long street and new that long street was lacking in a well organised club dedicated to underground music in its different forms.
The last four years – what’s been some highlights for Fiction i.e. in terms of international hosts, parties, etc.?
It has been a rollercoaster ride of epic proportions. we have been privileged to have hosted an array of well known international dj’s and acts. Most recently Pendulum did an impromptu DJ set on our Thursday night. Other guests include Rainer Truby, Alex Smoke, Ali B, Matt Cantor of the freestylers, Butane, Seth Troxler, General Midi, Baobinga among others…
The name – anything behind that ?
The name embodied the whole idea of what the place is all about. We wanted a space where people could escape reality for a while and dive into a world of underground music and retro references to pop culture. We feel we hit it on the head and couldnt have possibly come up with a better name.
DJs – insane line up to grace those decks…how’d the night go down with the crowd?
On the night we had Mysterion opening up with a down tempo dubstep/drum & bass set followed by DJ Low. Then Sedge Warbler ( DJ Dank and MC Disco) did their live thing and really worked the crowd up. Ali B followed with a classic set of rock remixes and mashups. Funafuji finished everyone off at the end of the night with her bass heavy dubstep.
Ali B – has he played at Fiction before and how did you get him back here for the bday?
This was Ali’s third trip to Cape Town and third set at Fiction. This time round he came down for AfrikaBurns where he played to very special sets in the desert.
Lots of fancy fella’s and strange aesthetic concoctions drifted around me….
Yeah, the dress was black tie, not everyone dressed up, but a number of people did which added to the festive mood. We decked the place out with all the regular party trimmings of balloons and streamers etc.
Anything up Fiction’s sleeves for the rest of 2010?
We just plan on putting on a great lineup for the world cup and hopefully keep the club going for another four years.
Thanks Jon! That’s it kids. Check out some of the pics from the night – and visit Fiction’s page http://www.fictionbar.com/
Peace. love. sunshine.
