New Opera Hero, a dance, opera and artistic collective, have just completed a four week residency at Shunt, a theatre group and performance space based in the tunnels underneath London Bridge Station.

New Opera Hero are led by Steff Ungerer and Michael Wilson, a powerful creative duo who have worked on the National Opera in London, Tokyo and Hamburg, as well as working on live shows for big names such as Pet Shop Boys, Asian Dub Foundation and most famously, Lady Gaga, for whom they created 3D elements for her live tour.

They call themselves “Pioneers of AudioAnimata” which is all about providing a platform for other bands and artists to connect elements of concert, art installation and stage performance within the structure of a band.

Their first production ‘The Will To Self-Destruct’ was shown at the Arcola Theatre in London and was then taken to Cairo where it was performed in front of the Egyptian Cultural Minister. Riding on the back of this success it went on to sell out to thousands when it was shown at the Royal Opera House in Leige.

May saw NOH build and sustain an electronic concert installation in one of the tunnels at Shunt where an intoxicating show wowed audiences night after night with it’s mix of rope-based acrobatics, interactive 3D projections which came in the shape of baby heads and skylines (also known as musim holographic technology) and live musical components which fused classical and operatic styles with industrial electronica and sound art.

NOH know how to unleash total assault on the audience’s senses with an overload of impressive visual and aural components. The way these all come together is partly left to chance, giving each performer the chance to improvise within the piece. Each layer of the multimedia college NOH creates is essential in understanding the overall meaning they’re trying to convey in each song.

If you are tiring of the endless two guitars, bass, drums and vocal set-up which most musicians see as adequately entertaining, then make a point of following up New Opera Hero who will most likely blow your mind with their ambitious and moving performances.
