The Women’s Institute (W.I) was first established in 1897 and now has over 205,000 members in the UK alone. The W.I carries a somewhat frumpy reputation and most people imagine a gaggle of old ladies, who meet each week in the village hall to discuss jam making techniques and various health complaints. This is indeed the case, except for a pocket of women from East London who go by the name of the Shoreditch Sisters, who have been tipped as the most glamourous W.I group in the country. I tagged along one Tuesday evening for the first meeting of 2010.

Now it’s 2010, the 1990’s are officially vintage… doesn’t that make you feel old?

Selfridges has teamed up with Rellik in their first ever retail collaboration to present a selection of original nineties and nineties-inspired products, all up for sale in one neon-coloured corner of the Oxford Street store. Grunge, Britpop, Nearly-There Technology, YBA’s. Grrrl and Girl Power, Supermodels and the rise of the Super-band are the main themes of the collection, which come together in eclectic and authentic harmony.

Those of you who find yourselves in the big smoke this January should take a trip to the National Portrait Gallery before the months out for the last chance to check out over 150 photographs of England’s finest rock ‘n’ roll treasures, from Beatles to Bowie and Hendrix to the Stones, it’s well worth a look as at least 100 of the images have never been seen before.

AMUTI 23 is a small and inconspicuous shop near Leicester Square, which is filled with an impressive array of cultural ephemera, rarities and doubling as an exhibition space.

The brains behind AMUTI 23 have gathered together 101 special items in time for the Christmas shopping rush to try and encourage people to give gifts which have a little more meaning and value behind them – than your average pair of socks from Marks & Spencers.

Lurking down a nondescript alley in Angel, Islington, is Electrowerkz; a venue which is growing increasingly synonymous amongst underground musicians and artists across London and plays host to eclectic nights run by the likes of Wrap records and other such beacons of cool. Mooks went along one rainy Friday evening to sample the delights of ‘I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night’, the maiden voyage at Electrowerkz of a multi-faceted club night which showcases bands, DJs, VJs, stand up comedians, dancers, spoken word performers, installations and also gives away free pies (mince, in this instance).

IT’S a rainy Saturday night in East London, when three taxis pull up outside a warehouse in Hackney. Armed with only a text message of it’s whereabouts, there’s a certain air of apprehension amongst my friends as we approach the doors. Once inside, our names are ticked off the guest list (this party is not for random walkers-in off the street) and we pay our £3 entry fee.

It’s one of our friends 25th birthday’s and she’s promptly presented with a handmade birthday card from the organisers. This all comes as a bit of surprise considering my only illegal rave experience involved being barricaded inside a Sainsbury’s storage facility in Brighton, with about 500 dreadlocked drug-dealers and their pet Alsatians whilst the police waited outside to shut it down and search everyone.

Jessica Hazel

I am a 25-year-old freelance journalist who lives in London. I have been writing about art, music and culture since graduating with a BA honours degree in Music And Visual Art from Brighton University in 2007. I started out writing for the student paper and then went on to write for publications such as NME, Artrocker and The Fly as a music journalist. I have also worked on several small magazines in editorial positions. I moved to London back in April of 2009 and have been doing my best to keep up with the fast-paced arts scene ever since. I live in East London which is currently the epicentre of aspiring new musicians and artists. Alongside my writing I also promote gigs and work in a vintage shop in Camden.
