From Cape Town’s Afrikaans suburb Bellville, punk-rock band Fokofpolisiekar is Francois Van Coke, Hunter Kennedy, Johnny De Ridder, Wynand Myburgh and Jaco ”SNAKEHEAD” Venter.

Fokofpolisiekar kicked off 2010 with a high-energy show in Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, the second time they played the Gardens after their by-now legendary performance there in 2005. This show seems to have set the pace for a jam-packed year, which will keep the band in the local music spotlight as much as ever before.

Friday 11 June 2010 is a day that will be forever etched in the history of South Africa… and of the world. It was a day characterized by rainbow colours, celebratory pandemonium and the sound of the Vuvuzela – the definitive symbol of the Fifa 2010 World Cup. Indeed, finally the time had come and South Africa was ready for it all. Today was the kick off for the 19th Fifa World Cup tournament, and the streets were alive with people from across the country, and across the globe – all feeling the momentous energy.

Four days ago, the only sound you could hear throughout South Africa was the sound of the Vuvuzela. As the countdown reached 0 and Fifa World Cup kick off was screened world-wide… it was a moment of pride and chaos. And it seems that June will be remembered as milestone month for those also off the field, where the piercing sounds of Vuvuzelas are instead the heart, soul and mind bending beats of filthy drum n bass. June 3 2010 was the night that Cape Town celebrated four years of drum n bass pandemonium – it was the fourth birthday of It Came From The Jungle – an weekly party driven by the prolific DJ Niskerone – Mark Stevens – who started these now legendary nights back in 2006 at Fiction night club on Long Street.

Meet Hello Mother F*&king Nasty, an illustrator who’s making a new name for himself with his unique employment of all things creative. When trying to dig deeper, in search of some report-style info, Hello MF Nasty was cryptic in his answers, leaving me with more questions than I intended to ask. It’s refreshing not to be verbally abused with philosophical arty explanations that always leave me with too much to write about, yet nothing real to share. And without much elaboration on the ‘what’s and why’s’ I had written down, it really comes down to self interpretation with Hello MF Nasty’s art work. Art is subjective, and it’s empowering to be given the liberty to make up one’s own mind whether there is some bigger meaning, or if things really are sometimes as they seem.

“Art is a bug that never leaves you alone.” Wilhelm Saayman

Wilhelm Saayman is living a life where no-one tells him what to do. He is making what he wants to make. He is inspired by the human condition: “getting older, growing hair where you didn’t have any before, finding the special in the mundane”.

Sarah Picton

I am Sarah, which means Princess. I am far from a Princess. Rather a master of spontaneity who strives to find flamboyancy in simple things. Breezy days and tanned feet make me smile. I am always making mistakes, but am finally starting to learn from them. Things which make me happy are camp fire ghost stories, sticking stickers, doodling, cold red apples, open minds and the world at large. I have started a blog. I have just got my first tattoo. It's the first music notes to a line to a PJ Harvey song that says "If that's all there is, my friend, then lets keep dancin’". I spend a lot of time thinking of old friends and good times. I spend more time thinking about how many places I want to explore though. Humbleness, getting out of my comfort zone and learning from others is of utmost importance to me. Dr. Seuss is my favourite author and my favourite line is "With brains in your head, and feet in your shoes, you can steer yourself in any direction you choose". I love watching people engage in things they are passionate about, it reminds me why we all have different talents and why we should embrace and celebrate them. I write for a living. I need to be challenged. I am sure I am ADD. I will be a political photojournalist one day. I talk really loudly and eat loads of popcorn and spill loads of coffee. I also say thank you, please and try smile and laugh a lot. And i HEARTSouth Africa, it rocks.
