PETER BRÖTZMANN is an artist, composer, graphic designer, musician and all round Renaissance man. Renowned for his prolific and staggeringly high-quality output, Brotzmann brings his multi-faceted talents to The Narrows gallery Melbourne this month. So Spoek….tell me a bit about yourself? I’m an Ndebele prince, rapper, dancer, DJ, dreamer, illustrator and graphic artist. I live between Johannesburg and Malmö Sweden. I work as various art/music collectives…namely: MSHINI WAM, SWEAT.X, PLAYDOE, AND H.I.V.I.P. Dylan Culhane has worked as editor for two of what I feel are South Africa’s most edgy, controversial, off-the-wall and inspirational mags – VICE (current role) and previously at One Small Seed magazine. Here is an interview with Dylan. He’s a guy with a permanent exhibition in his lounge, and I will say it again…take note of him, he’s already probably taken note of you. This is a report that comes with the intent to make your visions into a reality. And this is a guy who can help you realize it is possible. Enjoy. Opened in Akihabara, Tokyo in March 2010, 3331 Arts Chiyoda is a multi-level art center that aims to “create a new art form”. Located in the former Chiyoda Rensei Junior High School, this ‘alternative art space for the 21st century’ offers a range of artistic and cultural activities, as well as a place to link Tokyo with it’s surrounding regions and other East Asian arts communities.
If you’re looking for something inspirational, you might want to check out the newly released book, GENGA, by Hiraku Suzuki. The book contains exactly 1000 illustrations dedicated to language and the galaxy. Inspired by every aspect in his immediate environment, GENGA is a dictionary-sized microcosm made out of numerous signals that communicate times between present and future.
