13TH JAPAN MEDIA ARTS FESTIVAL - Tokyo

A record number of visitors attended the 13th Japan Media Arts Festival held in The National Art Center, Tokyo, in February. The 12 day festival was launched in 1997, to promote the creation and development of media arts. This years festival received more than 2,500 works from 54 countries, about 180 award-winning works and jury-recommended works. The festival highlights four art divisions including media based art, entertainment, animation and manga.

Fantasista Utamaro “COUTNERSTOP” - Tokyo

Strongly inspired by Japanese manga, Fantasista Utamaro creates works across several creative mediums including illustration, textile, graphic design and film production. Examples of Utamaro’s work include an illustration for Tokyo Bar in NY and manga works for mashcomix.

Known as one of the leading Japanese pixel designers, TEN aka ten_do_ten has just released his new book entitled: “CALM & PUNK Book #1 ten_do_ten” and hosted an exhibition to celebrate the book launch last December.

FITC Tokyo 2009 - Tokyo

The Flash festival FITC Tokyo 2009, was held in Japan for the first time last year.

One of the largest and longest running events of its kind in the world, FITC covers everything from Flash design, to motion design, creative inspiration, to other technologies like Flex, Air and processing. The festival, now in its’ eighth year, has toured through ten cities and five countries, with over 700 presentations and over 10,000 attendees annually.

Growing up in the sun-drenched Karoo, amongst little cave crawlies and lanky desert birds that can’t fly, Chris Slabber sees Cape Town as a place of wonder and surprise. Like a kid in a theme park, everything is a joyride. Aside from the “bergie” (homeless dude with a passion gap that is always drunk and shouting “Jou ma se POES” to his/her fellow bergies) waiting around each of Cape Town’s corner, is a world of opportunity and sensory indulgence. Each day comes wrapped in potential.

Just like a kid making a mess with finger paints, Al embraces the innocent joy of creating art. It’s about leaving behind all that hedonistic talk of trying to make sense of everything and is instead about looking at something and getting an honest, happy feeling out of it.
