Dylan Culhane has worked as editor for two of what I feel are South Africa’s most edgy, controversial, off-the-wall and inspirational mags – VICE (current role) and previously at One Small Seed magazine. Here is an interview with Dylan. He’s a guy with a permanent exhibition in his lounge, and I will say it again…take note of him, he’s already probably taken note of you. Last weekend, I managed to escape the smells and sounds of the big smoke and found myself in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, for Tallinn Music Week. In it’s second year, Tallin Music Week sees 6000 music fans, 100 artists and 107 international delegates descend on the city for three nights of music.

“You can now travel. Before he arrived (it) was a mess here. The highways were full of bandits and you couldn’t get out of the cities”. José Miguel explains while driving his taxi through the busy streets of Bogotá. He is referring to President Álvaro Uribe Vélez, undoubtedly the most popular leader in recent Colombian history.

“So you travel a lot now?” I reply, trying not to distract him.

He bellows with laughter: “No – emphasizing the ooo… I don’t have enough money to travel.”

Growing up in the sun-drenched Karoo, amongst little cave crawlies and lanky desert birds that can’t fly, Chris Slabber sees Cape Town as a place of wonder and surprise.
