Coney Island – New York City’s answer to a beach, home of the infamous ’shoot the freak’ attraction, the backdrop to the classic cult film The Warriors, and for one day a year, the gathering place of hundreds of mermaids and other bizarre creatures. Founded in 1983, the annual Mermaid Parade is the largest art parade in the U.S., originally spawned as a homage to Coney Island’s Mardi Gras that endured from 1903 to 1954.

Eduardo Galeano, in the first chapter of his masterpiece: “Open Veins of Latin America” describes the mines of Potosí. The history of this Bolivian town is the paradigm of European colonial exploitation. In Potosi the natives were forced to work as slaves to extract huge amounts of minerals that were then exported to Spain. The city was founded at the foot of Cerro Rico, a mountain full of mineral veins, particularly silver, so that the tip was said to shine under the rays of the sun. By 1625, Potosi had become one of the most heavily populated cities in the world. In its first 28 years of existence, the number of inhabitants had reached that of London and had even surpassed Rome, Madrid and Paris.
Friday 11 June 2010 is a day that will be forever etched in the history of South Africa… and of the world. It was a day characterized by rainbow colours, celebratory pandemonium and the sound of the Vuvuzela – the definitive symbol of the Fifa 2010 World Cup. Indeed, finally the time had come and South Africa was ready for it all. Today was the kick off for the 19th Fifa World Cup tournament, and the streets were alive with people from across the country, and across the globe – all feeling the momentous energy.
Four days ago, the only sound you could hear throughout South Africa was the sound of the Vuvuzela. As the countdown reached 0 and Fifa World Cup kick off was screened world-wide… it was a moment of pride and chaos. And it seems that June will be remembered as milestone month for those also off the field, where the piercing sounds of Vuvuzelas are instead the heart, soul and mind bending beats of filthy drum n bass. June 3 2010 was the night that Cape Town celebrated four years of drum n bass pandemonium – it was the fourth birthday of It Came From The Jungle – an weekly party driven by the prolific DJ Niskerone – Mark Stevens – who started these now legendary nights back in 2006 at Fiction night club on Long Street.
New York crowds are notoriously hard to please. It’s a byproduct of the dynamism of the city, and works as both a blessing and a curse; on any given night there will be at least three things worth going to, so as an artist you have to work hard, if not harder, than you would in any other place. But once you win us over, oh how we will reward you. And in Dam-Funk’s particular case, we will even pop, lock and break for you (as exhibited by five dudes taking up at least one third of the dance floor with their crazy moves). |
