23 year-old artist Ariel Brickman lives the kind of existence that out-of-towners describe with wide-eyed awe as a ‘New York lifestyle.’ Mainly this involves very large wigs, pasties, a lot of glitter, occasionally dressing in drag (and more frequently dressing with a bare midriff) and just downright fabulousness.
One person described Brickman to me as someone “with a very interesting train of thought,” which seems a very accurate statement, seeing as though there is evidence to back it. Her unique thought processes have led the Bushwick-based artist to create live installations featuring herself engaging with innovative concepts by way of colorful costumes and sets. Think a bath full of milk, or many tiny disco balls, and always boobs (a whole lot of ‘em).

Australia likes to think of itself as a pretty multicultural country. Whether you think that’s true, one indisputable fact is that we’ve got a number of cuisines down. Chinese? You got it. Italian? Some of the best. Indian? Well, maybe not as good as the curries in the UK, but pretty decent. But as awesome as we are at our phos and pad thais, one thing that’s a little harder to hunt down at home is good Latin American eats. If you’re ever in New York and need a reference point to start out with, the hottest tip we can offer you (and also a New York magazine pick) is to head to Brooklyn’s Red Hook Ball Fields.

The thrill of finding a bargain can easily become an addiction. There’s something awesome about feeling like you cheated the system, or that somehow you got lucky in amongst a mess of very expensive junk. Of course flea markets are a go-to for all things unusual, beautiful and vintage, but sometimes it’s hard to find a decent item under 20 bucks.

There’s nothing that will reduce you to a blubbering mess faster than kids singing their little hearts out. And not only just singing earnestly, completely absorbed by the song, but also singing in tune. And with harmonies. New York’s Staten Island PS22 Chorus, comprised of over 50 ten year-old kids who attend the elementary school, has already made Tori Amos, Beyonce, Phoenix, and many more artists well up with their covers of popular songs.

Robert De Niro, producer Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff founded Tribeca Film Festival, in 2001 as a response to 9/11 and their desire to revitalize lower Manhattan after the World Trade Center attacks. Since then, the festival has blossomed into the mammoth 12-day beast it is today, with its films seen by 2.3 million filmgoers over its eight-year existence.

Due to terms such as ‘mp3,’ and ‘downloads,’ many have been fearing the demise of the humble record store. And we’re not talking about the HMVs of the world; we’re talking about the independently owned, dusty vinyl, been around forever record stores. Thanks to Record Store Day championing our local musical peddlers, things are looking up.
