Brick Lane is awash with vintage shops and dealers. Most are trading the same sort of stock, but if you step off the main drag and down a side street, you might be lucky enough to stumble upon The Vintage Emporium, a new coffee house and vintage shop like no other.
The thrill of finding a bargain can easily become an addiction. There’s something awesome about feeling like you cheated the system, or that somehow you got lucky in amongst a mess of very expensive junk. Of course flea markets are a go-to for all things unusual, beautiful and vintage, but sometimes it’s hard to find a decent item under 20 bucks.

Selfridges has teamed up with Rellik in their first ever retail collaboration to present a selection of original nineties and nineties-inspired products, all up for sale in one neon-coloured corner of the Oxford Street store. Grunge, Britpop, Nearly-There Technology, YBA’s. Grrrl and Girl Power, Supermodels and the rise of the Super-band are the main themes of the collection, which come together in eclectic and authentic harmony.
Meet Jean Rene Onyangunga, a jester on the streets and a kinetic spectacle of colour and sound. He breaks into your world, primary coloured and fucking loud. Gallant and off the wall, he was born in Kinshasa and yeah, you can take the kid of the jungle but can’t take the jungle out of the kid. It’s hard to catch him as he hop-scotches along through life, hollering fully charged boom-box dialogues. But if you can by some chance catch him, please tell him to answer his fucking phone!
Back in the 90’s, when Britpop was enjoying it’s heyday, Camden was the hip kid’s heart of the capital. Nowadays, artists, designers and musicians have all migrated to the edgier East where Brick Lane has become a rat-run of kids in black rimmed glasses and wearing their Granny’s fur coats, all packing out the vast array of over-crowded and costly vintage outlets to bag themselves a nice Arran sweater for winter. |
