Brain Children is the brain child of Michael Mate and Maxwell Crumb, two Melbourne music veterans who’ve completely ruined their lives by relentlessly peddling their musical wares across the globe.
Indeed, these young men have spent the majority of their youths and adulthoods on tour, cutting their teeth on bad roads, sticky floors and ramshackle stages. These years of extended poverty have created a degree of musical knowhow and a lack of pretense that certainly sets them apart from their bovine contemporaries.

And we’re not talking about the HMVs of the world; we’re talking about the independently owned, dusty vinyl, been around forever record stores. Thanks to Record Store Day championing our local musical peddlers, things are looking up.

Meet Jean Rene Onyangunga, a jester on the streets and a kinetic spectacle of colour and sound. He breaks into your world, primary coloured and fucking loud. Gallant and off the wall, he was born in Kinshasa and yeah, you can take the kid of the jungle but can’t take the jungle out of the kid.
It’s hard to catch him as he hop-scotches along through life, hollering fully charged boom-box dialogues. But if you can by some chance catch him, please tell him to answer his fucking phone!

Freaks, geeks and music lovers rejoiced over this past weekend and came together under one roof in their version of heaven - the WFMU Record And CD Fair. The independent freeform radio station held its annual three day music extravanganza from Friday 23 – Sunday 25 October, with over 100 dealers spreading their wares over 10,000 square feet. Jazz, soul, psych and other expected genres were also interspersed between the lesser known ‘cheesecake’ and ‘nudes and sex’, leading us to believe that any type of music imaginable could be found at WFMU.

This gem of a spot, found amongst the pieroggi joints and bakeries of the Polish neighbourhood of Greenpoint, looks after your general sustenance levels via good sounds (vinyl only, of course), as well as good food.
